Security researchers at Microsoft said on Friday that the French magazine Charlie Hebdo was breached and their data leaked by an Iranian state-backed hacking team, who the FBI also blames for interference in the 2020 US presidential election.

The hackers known as “Holy Souls” posted that they would sell the data containing the contact details of over 200 000 Charlie Hebdo subscribers, a move thought to be a veiled threat at any of the magazine’s supporter’s safety.
